About Form 1040-ES
Who fills it in
Use Form 1040-ES to figure and pay estimated tax on income that has no withholding, such as self-employment earnings, interest, dividends, rents and alimony.
Where it goes
Pay the IRS electronically or by mail. A mailed payment counts as on time when it is postmarked by the due date.
When
For 2026 the payments are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You can skip the January payment if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027 and pay the whole balance with it.
Watch out for
- In February 2026 the IRS corrected the mailing addresses and the state and local tax deduction amount in the 2026 form — download the current PDF rather than an early copy.
- If you make more than four payments, each payment period still needs to add up to at least the amount due for that period.
