Visa application documents, prepared step by step

Immigration portals reject files for size, format and passwords, and a rejected upload delays the whole application. These five steps take a pile of papers to files every field will accept.

Step by step

  1. Make the photo to the size the application states — cropped from your own picture, not edited.

  2. Scan paper documents into PDF with your phone’s camera: certificates, degrees, employment letters.

  3. Remove the password from statements downloaded from online banking. ImmiAccount does not accept encrypted or secured PDFs, and other portals refuse them too.

  4. Combine pages that belong together. IRCC keeps only one file per document field, so six months of statements have to become one PDF.

  5. Compress each file under the portal’s limit — the limits for IRCC, ImmiAccount and USCIS are below.

Forms and templates

  • Form I-130 — Petition to sponsor a relative for a US green card.
  • Form I-864 — Affidavit of Support — the sponsor's legally enforceable promise to financially support an immigrant.

  • IRCC online applications

    Commonly 4 MB per file; as low as 2 MB on some forms

We do not submit applications, check them against a visa’s document checklist or translate documents. The portal’s own instructions always come first, and DocuGrip is not affiliated with any government.
