How to do it

Add the document you need to redact. Do this before sharing it, not after — once a file has gone out, redacting your copy changes nothing.

Draw black boxes over what has to go. This is not a drawing tool: the text underneath is removed from the file, not covered up. That distinction is the entire point.

Download the redacted file, then run Verify redaction on it. Checking is a separate step because the failure here is silent and expensive.
Questions about Redact PDF
- Is the text really gone or just hidden?
- Really gone. Drawing a black rectangle in a normal editor leaves the text underneath, where anyone can select and copy it — that is how several well-known leaks happened. Here the content is removed from the file itself.
- Why is there a separate tool to verify it?
- Because a redaction that failed looks exactly like one that worked. Verify redaction searches the page text, the metadata, annotations, form values, bookmarks and attachment names for the words you removed, so you find out before the recipient does.
- Does the file leave my device?
- No. Redaction happens without transmission, which matters here more than anywhere: sending a document somewhere to have its secrets removed defeats the purpose.
