Job application documents: CV, cover letter and certificates as PDFs

Most applications go through a website or an email, and both are hard on attachments. Send files that keep their layout, can be read by software and fit where they are going.

Step by step

  1. Save your CV and cover letter as PDF so the layout looks the same on every screen.

  2. Check that the PDF has real, selectable text. Applicant tracking systems read the text, and a CV exported as a picture reads as empty.

  3. Combine the cover letter, CV and certificates when the application takes a single file.

  4. Keep attachments small. Gmail takes 25 MB per message and many job portals far less — the limits we track are below.

  5. When the offer arrives, sign it and send it back as a PDF.

  • Indian recruitment portals (UPSC, SSC, RRB, IBPS)
