Questions about Sanitize a PDF
- Can a PDF really contain code?
- Yes. The format supports embedded JavaScript, actions that fire when the document opens, and actions that launch external programs. Most readers restrict them now, but a document that carries them is a document worth cleaning before it goes into your systems.
- Why keep the attachments instead of deleting them?
- Because an attachment is often the point of the document — an invoice with the XML inside it, a form with supporting files. Removing it silently would break the document to make a report look tidier. You are told what is there and you decide.
- Is this an antivirus?
- No, and do not treat it as one. It removes active content that PDFs are allowed to carry. It does not scan for malware, and a clean report here is not a statement that the file is safe.
