About Form 4868
Who fills it in
U.S. citizens and residents file Form 4868 to get an automatic extension of time to file their individual income tax return.
Where it goes
File it electronically through tax software or a tax professional, or mail the paper form. Paying all or part of your estimated tax electronically and marking it as an extension payment also counts — no form needed.
When
File it by the regular due date of your return. The extension generally can’t go beyond 6 months: October 15, 2026, for most 2025 calendar-year returns.
Watch out for
- It extends the time to file, not to pay. Interest runs on any tax not paid by the regular due date.
- Don’t mail Form 4868 if you filed it electronically, unless you are sending a payment by check or money order.
