Form I-485 is the application to register permanent residence — adjustment of status — for people who are already in the United States.

Where it goes

File it with USCIS. USCIS offers online filing for certain applicants and their representatives; others file by mail.

Watch out for

  • Use the 09/18/26 edition. USCIS rejects the 01/20/25 and 09/04/26 editions if they are postmarked or submitted electronically on or after September 18, 2026.
  • Submit Form I-693, the report of the immigration medical examination and vaccination record. Online filers open the sealed envelope from the civil surgeon and upload the completed form.
  • Online, each evidence file can be up to 12 MB (PDF, JPG or JPEG).
