Where it goes
File it online or by mail. USCIS changed the mailing addresses on October 7, 2026 — use the current Direct Filing Addresses page for your reason for filing.
When
Apply before your current authorized stay expires, as shown on your Form I-94. USCIS excuses a late filing only in very limited circumstances.
Watch out for
- Use the 08/28/24 edition. Under a September 14, 2026 court order, USCIS is not accepting the 09/15/26 edition.
- Read the instructions first to confirm I-539 is the right form for your extension or change of status.
