About Form W-7

Who fills it in

Use Form W-7 to apply for or renew an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) — the 9-digit IRS number for people who need a U.S. taxpayer number but can’t get a Social Security number.

Where it goes

Mail it with your tax return and supporting documents to the IRS ITIN Operation, or apply in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or through an acceptance agent.

When

For a first ITIN, attach Form W-7 to the front of the tax return that needs it and file by that return’s due date. Applications that meet an exception can be sent at any time.

Watch out for

  • Send original identity documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. Originals are mailed back; if they aren’t back within 60 days, call the IRS.
  • You can’t e-file a return with an ITIN in the calendar year the ITIN is assigned.
