Questions about Pages to PDF
- How can this work without Apple software?
- Because an iWork file is a zip archive, and Apple saves a ready-made PDF preview inside it. We take that preview out. Nothing is re-rendered and no layout is guessed at, so what you get is exactly the page Pages last saved.
- I got a message saying there is no preview.
- Then the file was saved without one — it happens with very old documents and with files created by other software. We say so rather than hand you an empty document, because a silent empty PDF is worse than a clear no. Opening and resaving it on a Mac puts the preview back.
- Can I edit the result?
- Not as a Pages document; you get a PDF, which is a finished page. You can still annotate it, sign it or fill its fields with the tools here. For real editing you need Pages itself, or its free version at iCloud.com.
