- Where does this information actually show up?
- In the reader’s window title, in file listings, in search results, and in any system that catalogues documents. It is why a downloaded file so often shows a title like "Microsoft Word - final draft 3" instead of the report’s real name — that string is stored inside, and this is where it gets fixed.
- Is this enough to anonymise a document?
- No. This edits the fields you can see; a PDF also carries producer strings, timestamps and sometimes an XMP block, and a scan may hold camera details inside its images. For anonymising before submission, use Remove metadata, which is built for that job.
- Why do keywords matter?
- Because document management systems and desktop search read them, and most files have none. In an archive of thousands of PDFs, keywords are often the only thing that makes a document findable by anything other than its filename.
