About Form 1040
Who fills it in
U.S. taxpayers use Form 1040 to file their annual income tax return. Taxpayers age 65 or older may use Form 1040-SR, which has the same schedules and instructions.
Where it goes
File it with the IRS — electronically through tax software or on paper.
When
The current form on the IRS page is for tax year 2025. The return for tax year 2026 is normally due on April 15, 2027; confirm the date on the IRS page once the 2026 form is published.
Watch out for
- Additional income, deductions, taxes and credits go on schedules: Schedule 1, Schedule 1-A, Schedule 2 and Schedule 3.
- Keep copies of what you file and the forms you received, such as W-2 and 1099, together in one place.
