About Form 941
Who fills it in
Employers use Form 941 to report federal income tax, social security and Medicare tax withheld from employees’ paychecks, and the employer’s own share of social security and Medicare tax.
Where it goes
File it with the IRS. Electronic filing is encouraged; a paper return goes to an address that depends on your location and on whether a payment is enclosed.
When
Form 941 is due by the last day of the month after each quarter ends. Once you start, you file every quarter — even with no taxes to report — unless you are a seasonal employer or filing a final return.
Watch out for
- File only once for each quarter: if you filed electronically, don’t also mail a paper Form 941.
- Semiweekly schedule depositors attach Schedule B (Form 941).
