How to do it

  1. 1

    Add your file

Add a PDF that has bookmarks — a report, a book, a court bundle. The document already knows where its own chapters begin, which is what this uses.

  2. 2

Set it up the way you want

Choose how deep to split. Level zero uses only top-level bookmarks; going deeper splits at sub-sections too, which can produce a lot of files.

  3. 3

    Download the result

Download the parts. Each file is named after its bookmark, numbered so the order survives in your folder.

Questions about Split by bookmarks

It says there are no bookmarks.
Then the document has none, and there is nothing to split on. Use Split PDF to cut at page numbers instead, or Extract pages to pull out a specific range.
What happens to pages before the first bookmark?
They become their own file rather than disappearing. A cover and a table of contents usually sit there, and silently dropping them would lose the first pages of your document.
Why did it skip one of my bookmarks?
Because its target could not be resolved to a page. Rather than guess, it skips — cutting at the wrong page would split a chapter down the middle, and you would only notice after sending the files on.
