How to add a watermark to a PDF
A “DRAFT” across every page stops an unfinished version from being mistaken for the final one; “SAMPLE” discourages someone from reusing your work as their own. This guide covers adding a text watermark, choosing a look that is visible without drowning the content, and the limits every watermark has.

How to add a watermark, step by step
Thumbnails let you see the layout first, so the mark does not end up over a signature block.
- Open Watermark PDF and add the document.
- Type the text, for example DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL.
- Set the angle and the opacity, and limit the mark to certain pages if needed.
- Run the tool and download the watermarked PDF.
Choosing the look
A diagonal mark at 45° with low opacity is the classic draft look: noticeable, but the text underneath stays easy to read. A horizontal, more opaque mark reads as a firm stamp. If the watermark competes with the content, lower the opacity rather than making it smaller.
The text underneath is untouched in the file, so it stays searchable, selectable and copyable. The watermark is added on top; nothing is covered up or removed.
Watermark or stamp?
A watermark sits in the middle of the page, tilted and faint, and says this copy is not the official one. A stamp sits in a corner, straight and readable, on the pages you choose, and says approved, received or paid. For the second job, use Add stamp to PDF, which also accepts a logo image.
What a watermark cannot do
Anyone with a PDF editor can remove a drawn watermark, whichever tool added it. A watermark states intent and discourages casual reuse; it is not a security control. To stop people opening the file at all, add a password with Protect PDF.
