How to do it

Add a scan that came out crooked — a page fed at an angle, a book photographed by hand, anything where the text runs slightly downhill.

Set it up the way you want
Nothing to set. The angle is measured from the text lines themselves rather than guessed, then each page is rotated back by exactly that much.

Download the straightened file. Beyond looking better, this is the single most useful thing you can do before running OCR.
Questions about Deskew scans
- Why does straightening matter so much for OCR?
- Because recognition works line by line, and a line running at an angle crosses into the one above or below. Even two or three degrees of skew measurably drops accuracy, so a minute of straightening saves a lot of correcting afterwards.
- Is the angle measured or estimated?
- Measured, from the text on the page. Each page is handled on its own, which matters because sheets fed through a scanner rarely all tilt the same way.
- Will the edges get cut off?
- No. Rotating a page means the corners need more room, and the page is expanded rather than cropped. You may see a slightly wider margin; you will not lose text.
