How to rotate pages in a PDF and save them that way

A scanner feeds one sheet in landscape, a phone photo lands on its side, and suddenly page seven of a report has to be read with a tilted head. Rotating it in a PDF reader fixes it for you, only until the file is closed. This guide shows how to rotate pages so the change is saved in the document itself.

Viewing rotation versus saved rotation

Most PDF readers have a rotate button, but it only turns your view. The file is unchanged, so the next person who opens it sees the page sideways again. Rotating with Rotate PDF writes the turn into the page itself, so it opens the right way up everywhere: in a browser, in Acrobat, on a phone and on paper.

How to rotate a PDF, step by step

Thumbnails show which pages are sideways before you change anything.

  1. Open Rotate PDF and add the document.
  2. Choose the turn: 90° right, 90° left or 180°.
  3. Leave the page range empty to rotate every page, or enter only the pages that are wrong.
  4. Run the tool and download the corrected file.

Pages you do not select are copied through completely unchanged, so fixing three sideways scans in a hundred-page document touches only those three.

Does rotating reduce quality?

No. Nothing is re-rendered: the rotation is a single instruction stored on the page. Text stays text, images stay byte-for-byte identical, and the file size barely changes.

Crooked scans and pages in the wrong order

Two related problems look similar but need different tools.

  • A page tilted by a few degrees is skewed, not rotated. Deskew scans measures the angle from the text lines and straightens each page, which also improves OCR accuracy.
  • Pages that are the right way up but in the wrong sequence need Organize PDF, where you drag thumbnails into order.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The turn is stored in the page, so every reader shows it the same way. Rotating the view in a PDF reader is not saved.

Yes. Enter that page number in the range and every other page is left exactly as it was.

Rotation turns pages in 90° steps. For a small tilt, use Deskew scans, which straightens each page by the measured angle.
