A filled-in form looks blank to someone else

You filled in a PDF form, it looked right, and the recipient says the fields are empty. The answers are usually in the file — the other viewer is just not drawing them. Flattening the form before you send it fixes that for everyone.

Why the answers disappear

A form field stores its value separately from how that value looks on the page. Some viewers — phone previews, some browsers, some print drivers — show only the look and ignore the value. If the look was never saved, they show an empty box.

Flatten before you send

Flattening turns every answer into ordinary page content. It then looks the same in every viewer and on paper — and can no longer be changed, which is usually what you want for a signed or submitted form.

  1. Fill in the form and download it.
  2. Open Flatten PDF and add the filled file.
  3. Send the flattened copy. Keep the fillable one if you may need to change answers later.

When not to flatten

If the recipient must process the answers automatically — some government and HR systems read the field values — send the fillable file as they asked. When in doubt, send both and name them clearly.

Frequently asked questions

A drawn or typed signature stays as it looks. A certificate-based digital signature is invalidated by any change, so flatten before signing digitally, not after.
