Questions about Optimize PDF for web
- Will my file get smaller?
- Barely, and that is not the point. This changes the order of the file, not its contents. What changes is behaviour: a 40 MB manual can show page one after a moment instead of after the whole download. If you want a smaller file, that is Compress PDF.
- How does that work?
- A normal PDF keeps the index of where everything lives at the end, so a reader has to fetch the end before it can draw anything. Optimised files put that index at the front and group each page’s objects together, which lets a browser request just the first page.
- Do I need this for a file I send by email?
- No. It only helps when the file is being streamed over a network — a website, a document viewer, a link people click. An attachment is downloaded whole before it opens, so the arrangement makes no difference.
