Rent receipt template

A rent receipt is the tenant’s proof that rent was paid — useful for cash payments, tax records, benefit and visa applications, and any later disagreement. Fill in the payment details, sign as the landlord, and the tenant can countersign to confirm the copy they received.

This template is a general starting point, not legal advice. Laws differ between countries and states, so have it checked before signing anything important.

Fill in the details

Anything you leave empty becomes a blank line in the document, to fill in by hand or during signing.

Make each receipt count

A receipt is only useful if it can be matched to a payment later.

  • Number receipts in order and never reuse a number.
  • Write the rent period, not only the date paid, so partial and late payments are clear.
  • Record any balance still owed, even if it is zero.

Frequently asked questions

Some states and cities require a receipt, especially for cash payments; elsewhere it is simply good practice. Either way, a signed receipt protects both sides.

Yes. A signed PDF is a clear record, and sending it for signature lets the tenant confirm the copy they received.
