Compress a PDF for the IRS Document Upload Tool
When an IRS notice asks for documents, the Document Upload Tool takes PDF, JPEG or PNG files up to 15 MB each, 40 files at a time. Bank statements and receipts scanned at high resolution are what go over. The target is set to 14 MB.

Before you upload to the IRS Document Upload Tool
- Combine the pages for one item into a single PDF in the order the notice lists them, then compress it.
- Name files with letters, numbers and dashes only: the tool can flag names with symbols such as "!".
- Keep the notice number handy: the upload link in the notice ties your files to your case.

Compression shrinks images. A long file that is mostly text can stay above the limit; these get it through.
